Japanese Relief Efforts
On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 earthquake occurred 72 kilometers(45 miles) off the northeastern coast of Japan. This triggered a deadly tsunami which devastated Japan's northeastern coastline and has impacted the rest of the country.
According to the National Police Agency of Japan's Damage Situation and Police Countermeasures Report, as of 10:00 am on March 28, 2011 the total number of dead reported is 10,872. The total number of people missing is 16,244 and the total number of injured is 2,776. Many people have been left homeless by this event.
As of November 2, 2011 the total number of dead reported is 15,829. The total number of people missing is 3,679 and the total number of injured is 5,943.
One year later
As of March 11, 2012, the total number of dead reported is 15,854. The total number of people missing is 3,155 and the total number of injured is 26,992.
Japan Club has taken action to raise funds to help Japan in their time of need. Across campus and throughout the surrounding community, Japan Club has put out donation cans and set up tabling in the Dining Commons to collect donations.
Our final total raised as of June 25th, 2011: $3210.57.
As of April 8, Japan Club has raised $2055.74.
